The Rio Ruidoso is not what it once was when our grandparents fished it when they were kids. The weather patterns have changed in the last 100 years, and the Little Bear fire really decimated the area. But there are still some opportunities to be had.
It shouldn’t be difficult to find the Ruidoso as it runs right through town. If you track the river up beyond where it meets the Carrizo Creek and through the residential areas, you come upon the Mescalero Apache Land. With permission they allow outsiders to fish their sacred land, so please obey all regulations and respect their sovereignty.
Season: April – October for Mescalero; year-round for the remainder of the river
Trout: Stocked rainbows, possibly some browns
Campgrounds: Cedar Creek, Oak Grove, Skyline, South Fork
